or as they say in Khmer, "jum-reap soo-a"!
The One World delegation safely and successfully traveled halfway across the world, hopping flights in DC, LA and Bangkok to arrive in Cambodia on Tuesday, June 1.
Since stepping foot in this country we've managed to ride several tuk-tuks, eat spicy spicy food, check out a hip-hop performance and receive an awkward but memorable massage (I promise it wasn't nearly as bad as it might sound).
However, it hasn't all been fun and games! Over the course of three days we completed an intense training session covering material that will inform our work both here and in our respective communities back home. Topics covered areas such as human rights, leadership skills, social justice advocacy and coalition building among other things.
Our gracious hosts - Bridges Across Borders Cambodia - spearheaded by the volunteer coordinator and general badass, Vy, have welcomed us with open arms, huge smiles, and lots and LOTS of amazing fruits.
This Monday, we'll each be starting our internships at four different NGO's that serve underrepresented communities in Cambodia. These organizations are the Cambodian Centre for Human Rights (CCHR), Reproductive and Child Health Alliance (RACHA), Tiny Toones, and BABSEA.
Our team is comprised of 6 very dedicated, committed, empowered young leaders of color. We'll each be contributing to this blog, sharing our thoughts, videos, and general feelings as the days pass. Feel free to follow our travels as we document what will surely be an unforgettable summer.
Stay tuned for a more detailed introduction to the 2010 team, memorable stories waiting to be told, and photos that speak more than words.
Until next time,
Trixie and OW Cambodia
